This easy homemade sloppy joe recipe is made with simple ingredients like ground beef, onion, bell pepper, ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce, for a rich, sweet and tangy sauce in just 20 minutes.

Why this Sloppy Joe Recipe Works
What makes this recipe stand out is its balance. The beef is seared for extra flavor, and cooks down with onion and green pepper first, so it starts with real savory flavor before the sauce ever goes in. Then the ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar create that classic sloppy joe taste: tangy, sweet, and rich, without tasting one dimensional or overly sweet.
Another reason I keep coming back to this family recipe is its texture. The sauce thickens right in the pan and clings to the meat instead of turning loose and watery, so it piles onto the bun without falling apart after the first bite. It’s got all the nostalgic flavor of sloppy joe, but still holds up as an easy weeknight dinner.
This isn’t just a Sloppy Joe recipe, it’s a reliable, dependable family favorite.

Why This Family Recipe Is So Special
This is the sloppy joe recipe I grew up eating. The one my Great Grandmom made, then my Grandmom, my Mom, and now me. It’s one of those meals that instantly brings back memories. Busy weeknights, casual family dinners, and those days when you just needed something simple and comforting on the table, fast.
And honestly? We’ve lost this recipe more times than I can count, only to find the recipe card again and guard it like treasure.
What makes it special is how simple it is. No canned sauce, no complicated ingredients, just a handful of pantry staples that come together into something flavor-packed and delicious. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it.

This recipe is so delicious! We often take supper over to an older neighbor and he requested sloppy joes for his birthday. I made these last week and he raved about them! Both my husband and our friend said they were the best sloppy joes he'd ever had!"

Ingredients & Substitutions
You only need a handful of simple pantry ingredients to make this easy sloppy joe recipe from scratch:
Ground Beef. Use 85–90% lean for the best flavor without excess grease.
You can also substitute ground turkey or ground chicken.
Onion & Green Bell Pepper. These add sweetness and texture to the sloppy joes. Adding them is optional, but highly recommended.
Ketchup. This is the base of the sauce, giving it a saucy sweetness and a bit of tang.
Worcestershire Sauce. Adds a deep, rich, savory flavor to the sauce.
Mustard. Balances the sweetness with a subtle tang. Use classic yellow mustard for the best flavor without overpowering the sauce.
Sugar. You’ll add just enough to round out the acidity in the sauce. Adjust to taste.

How to Make Sloppy Joes
Step 1: Cook the Peppers & Onions. Heat a bit of cooking oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Cook onion and bell pepper until softened.
Step 2: Brown the Beef. Add ground beef and cook until browned, flip over, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess grease if needed.
Step 3: Add the Sauce. Stir in ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar until fully combined.
Step 4: Simmer. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, until the sauce is thick and glossy, and clings to the meat. The sauce should leave a clean trail when you drag a spoon through it.
Step 5: Serve. Serve on toasted buns and enjoy warm right from the pan! At this point, your kitchen will smell amazing- That’s how you know it’s ready.

Make Ahead Tip
You can make the sloppy joe mixture up to 2 days ahead, and warm through just before serving.
Keep the sloppy joe mixture warm in a slow cooker on low or warm setting for parties, tailgates, or busy weeknights. Add a splash of water if it gets too thick, and stir every 30 minutes or so before serving.
Pro Tips for Perfect Sloppy Joes
- Toast your buns to prevent sogginess.
- Use slightly fatty beef for richer flavor, but be sure to drain.

How to Adjust the Flavor
Make these sloppy joes perfect for your taste!
- Too sweet? Add a splash of vinegar or a bit of extra mustard.
- Too tangy? Add an additional pinch of sugar.
- Too thick? Add a splash of water to thin it out.
- Too thin? Simmer a minute or two longer.

What to Serve with Sloppy Joes
- French fries or potato chips
- Coleslaw
- Mac and cheese
- Pickles
- Baked beans

Variations
This sloppy joe recipe is great as-is, but there are a few easy ways to change it using what you have on hand, as well as how you serve it.
Make it spicy: Add a little splash of hot sauce, a pinch of cayenne, or some diced jalapeño with the peppers and onion. This will give it some heat without changing the sweet and tangy base too much.
Use ground turkey instead of beef: Ground turkey works well, but the flavor will be a little lighter. Be sure to season well and let the sauce simmer long enough to build that classic sloppy joe flavor, with a lighter twist.
Serving options: If you don’t want to serve it on buns, it also works well spooned over baked potatoes, rice, or toast!

Equipment
- large frying pan or saute pan
Ingredients
- 1 lb 80/20 ground beef*
- 1 small onion, chopped fine
- 1 medium green pepper, chopped fine
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ½ cup ketchup
- 2 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon canola oil
- salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Sauté onions and pepper in 1 tablespoon canola oil in a large frying pan over medium-low heat for about 5 minutes, until they begin to soften. 2. Move onions and peppers to outer edge of pan and increase heat to medium-high. 3. Brown the ground beef: Spread ground beef out in center of pan in an even layer and cook, undisturbed, for 5 minutes, or until meat begins to brown. 4. Season beef with salt and pepper, and flip over. Continue to cook, breaking meat apart into small pieces as you go with a wooden spoon or spatula, until meat is cooked through and no longer pink, about 2-3 minutes. 5. Reduce heat to medium-low and add in ketchup, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce and sugar. Cook 2-3 minutes until flavors are melded. Serve on burger buns, brioche buns or potato rolls.
Notes
The same portion of lean ground beef or bison could replace the 80/20 ground beef. Troubleshooting: Sauce Too thick? Add a splash of water to loosen it up.
Too loose? Simmer the sloppy joes 2-3 minutes longer.
Want a tangier sauce? Add a little extra mustard or Worcestershire sauce.
Want it a bit sweeter? Add a pinch more sugar.

Did use red pepper instead of green. Really liked the flavor compared to the pre-made canned variety. Put a slice of provolone on them and warmed sandwiches in oven for a few minutes - delicious!

I substituted 85/15% lean ground turkey, plus sweet onion and sweet peppers, and brown sugar, plus a few shakes of res pepper flakes. It had the sweet, spicy taste! I also increased the sauce by 1/2. Served with Cole Slaw and tator tots. It was delicious!
I will definitely make it again.
